The short answer
Clutch is worth using to build a long list of agencies, not to choose one. Its Verified badge confirms a registered business with an acceptable credit rating, and agencies pay for the subscription behind it. Page one of a UK directory is ordered by sponsorship first. Sort by Clutch Rank, then check delivery yourself.
Key takeaways
- The Clutch Verified badge rests on a business credit check through CreditSafe. Clutch says it is not an endorsement.
- The badge follows a purchase: an agency is asked for its registration details after buying the subscription or an advertising product.
- Directory pages list paying companies first by default. Sorting by Clutch Rank removes the paid order.
- Reviews come from real, identified clients, but the agency chooses whom to invite.
- Clutch answers whether an agency is solvent and has satisfied clients. Whether it suits a practice of your size is still your question.
Most partners read the green Verified badge on a Clutch profile as a sign that somebody has checked the agency's work. Clutch's own help centre describes something narrower: a business credit check and a review of operating history, run with CreditSafe. On 14 September 2026 the UK digital marketing directory on Clutch listed 9,149 companies, and every one of the 51 on its first page carried a Verified or Premier Verified badge.
None of that makes Clutch a bad tool. It makes it a directory funded by the agencies it lists, which is a sensible business and a different thing from a referee. The useful question for a managing partner is which parts of a Clutch profile carry evidence and which parts carry spend.
What the Verified badge checks, in Clutch's own words
Clutch describes Verified as a multi-step vetting process, and its first route to a badge is a credit rating. The qualifying rules offer two routes. One needs a star average above 3.0 and a very low to moderate CreditSafe risk rating, with no minimum number of reviews stated. The other replaces the credit rating with at least three verified reviews and a business history check by Clutch.
The buyer guidance says what the credit score measures: the likelihood of a business failing or falling seriously behind on its payments. That is a fair thing to know about a supplier you will pay monthly. It says nothing about whether the campaigns worked.
Verified badge
Registration is active, and either the credit rating or a set of verified reviews meets the bar.
Whether the work was any good. Clutch says the badge does not guarantee project success.
Premier Verified badge
The credit rating plus at least three verified reviews, one of them in the last year.
Whether any of those clients resemble a firm of 10 to 50 people.
Position on page one
Sponsorship tier first, with Clutch Rank ordering companies inside a tier.
Whether a better-ranked agency sits on page four because it does not sponsor the page.
A verified review
The reviewer's identity and work history, by methods Clutch does not disclose.
How many unhappy clients were never invited to write one.
Clutch Guarantee badge
The provider has committed in writing to a 14-day refund of eligible fees.
Anything after day 14, or anything missing from your own contract.
Page one is sorted by who pays, then by merit
Clutch's own placement rules put sponsors at the top of a directory page, then Clutch Verified subscribers, then every other company. Sponsorship runs across nine tiers, from Starter to Quadruple Diamond, and the position rules say the highest tier appears first. Clutch Rank orders sponsors within a tier.
- Companies listed
- 9,149
- On page one
- 51
- Page one carrying a badge
- 51
- Sponsorship tiers above them
- 9
Clutch is open about this. The directory page itself states that it may earn a fee for some placements, and the help centre says sponsorship does not affect the Leaders Matrix. The trouble is that the default sort is the paid one.
The reviews are real people, chosen by the agency
Clutch verifies who wrote a review, and the agency decides who is asked. Clutch says every review goes through a process to confirm the reviewer's identity and work history, and that agencies cannot approve a review before it is published. Both are real protections. The collection guidance then tells agencies to send their own clients a customised review link. An agency with forty clients and eleven reviews chose whom to ask.
A partner might assume consumer law polices this. It does not reach you. The fake review ban in Schedule 20 of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 applies to commercial practices aimed at consumers, and section 225 defines a consumer as an individual acting wholly or mainly outside their business. A UK firm appointing a marketing agency is a business buyer, so the review evidence carries only the weight Clutch's own process gives it.

Free to your firm. The agency pays us, and only if the relationship works, which means an introduction that fails costs us money rather than earning a placement fee.
Get a recommendationHow to use Clutch without being steered
Treat Clutch as a source of names, then test each name somewhere Clutch does not control.
- Sort by Clutch Rank before reading anything. It removes the paid order and shows the research ranking, where reviews carry half of the 40 point Ability to Deliver score.
- Read the dates, not the stars. A 5.0 average built on reviews from 2020 describes a team that may have left. Look for clients of a practice's size, and treat the hourly rate band as the agency's own entry, which is part of why quotes vary so much for the same job.
- Run the registration check yourself. The agency's page on Companies House shows its status and when its next accounts are due, free and without an account. A due date already passed is worth a question, and the questions worth checking against a public record go further.
- Ask for a reference who did not come through Clutch. A client the agency did not invite to review is the closest thing to a random sample you will get, and the signals that show whether an agency is any good can be checked without the agency's help.
When Clutch is the wrong tool, and when to hire nobody yet
Clutch suits a firm that already knows the job and wants options. It suits a firm that does not know what it needs far less, because a directory answers “who” and assumes “what” is settled.
Two conditions mean no agency should be hired yet, from Clutch or anywhere else. The first is a brief that cannot name the result a partner would pay for. The second is a firm with no one who can give an agency two hours a month, because a retainer without an owner inside the firm drifts, whatever the agency's skill.
We should declare our own interest, since this page asks you to discount everyone else's. Agency Network Solutions is also paid by agencies. The difference is when: only after an introduction becomes a working relationship, never for placement. How that works is set out on our home page, so you can judge the incentive for yourself.
Frequently asked questions
What partners ask before trusting a directory.
Is Clutch free for a firm looking for an agency?
Yes. Clutch charges the agencies, not the buyer. Agencies pay for placement on directory pages and for the Clutch Verified subscription, which is why the order of a directory page reflects spend before it reflects Clutch's own ranking.
What does Clutch Verified actually mean?
It means Clutch has confirmed an active registration and either a business credit check through CreditSafe or, on an alternative route, a set of verified reviews. Clutch states that the badge is not an endorsement and does not guarantee project success.
Are Clutch reviews genuine?
Clutch says it confirms each reviewer's identity and work history, without publishing its methods. The agency chooses which clients to invite, so the reviews are real but selected. The UK ban on fake reviews protects consumers, and a firm buying for its business is not one.
How do you see Clutch's ranking without the sponsored order?
Filter the directory page by Clutch Rank. Clutch says sponsorship does not affect its Leaders Matrix, and that sorting by Clutch Rank lists companies by their position in it.
What is the Clutch Guarantee?
A 14-day refund of eligible fees, offered only by providers who have signed up to it. Clutch tells buyers to confirm the Guarantee clause is in the contract before signing, because the protection sits in the contract rather than on the badge.
